Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a thrilling plot featuring angels, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in influence within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Key plot points for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.

The Warrior Group Revealed

The latest chapter concluded with a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will separate from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where non-violent answers are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—exploited the enemy for his personal gain, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and taking all the powerful objects to auction.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, beyond the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a specific drive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, seeks revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their reputation as important members in House Halovar could enable the team reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character pledged a life debt to The savior for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are hunted by the rulers that rule the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to the remote area in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

From the recent installment’s post-show segment, we find out that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the rest of the players to round up the Questers and Planners tables.

Fans can look forward to discovering which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
